Looking for a unique way to see the wilderness surrounding Tromsø? These snowmobiling tours in Tromsø will help you plan that type of adventure!
In my guide, I will take you through the best Tromsø snowmobile tours, including ones that are perfect for beginners. At the end of the guide, I also give some of my tips to help you plan – I have been snowmobiling for years and it is one of my favorite things to do in winter!
Quick Tromsø Travel Guide
If you’re traveling to Tromsø last minute, ensure you have lodging and tours booked ahead of time (as much as you can)! Below are some of my top picks:
❄️ Best tours and activities from Tromsø:
- Daytime snowmobile safari at Camp Tamok (the #1 snowmobile option!)
- Best northern lights tour from Tromsø (my favorite aurora tour in Tromsø)
- Sami reindeer feeding and northern lights (best aurora combo option)
🛌 Top hotels and lodging in Tromsø:
- Clarion ‘The Edge’ (Tromsø’s most beautiful hotel – on the sea!)
- Thon Hotel Tromsø (I’ve stayed here twice and recommend it)
- Radisson Blu (many tours leave from here – by the harbor)
🍲 Popular places to eat in Tromsø: Fiskekompaniet, Bardus Bistro, RUDA, Smørtorget, Størhus, Full Steam

I have done a variety of snowmobile tours – including ones that are 14 hours in the harshest of climates, so I do know what to expect as a beginner and as an intermediate rider.
I do not have my own snowmobile, however, so definitely wouldn’t class myself as an expert. If you’re an expert snowmobiler, I would consult snowmobile companies in Tromsø for rental options rather than one of these tours.
If you have any questions about snowmobiling in Tromsø (or in Norway, in general), please let me know in the comments. Thanks!

Tromsø Snowmobile Tours Overview
My guide will contain four unique snowmobiling tours in Tromsø, including an overnight option that is not a day trip (please realize this when you’re reading). This tour may be a long one, but it is still beginner-friendly.
⬇️ The snowmobile tours in this guide are:
- Daytime snowmobiling tour at Camp Tamok (the most popular snowmobile tour in Tromsø!)
- Evening snowmobiling tour at Camp Tamok (chance to see the northern lights, as well!)
- Lyngen Alps guided snowmobile tour (another popular option)
- Overnight snowmobile safari in the Lyngen Alps (you will stay in a glass igloo hotel)
I previously used to recommend a tour that went from Tromsø to Kilpisjarvi, Finland but I do not see that it is currently available or projected as becoming available. If it does open for bookings with included transportation from Tromsø, I will be adding it to the guide!
1. Daytime snowmobiling tour at Camp Tamok (My #1 Pick)
Dates available: December 1, 2024 to April 6, 2025
Duration: 7 hours
Languages: English
Meeting Point: Samuel Arnesens gate 5

This Tromsø snowmobile tour is the most popular in the city and it operates during the daytime at Camp Tamok, which is in the same area as the Tromsø Ice Domes.
The tour will pick you up in the city center and drive you by bus out to Camp Tamok, which is around 1.5 hours from Tromsø. Upon arrival, you will meet your guide, receive a safety briefing, and put on your winter gear that is provided… then it is adventure time!
Camp Tamok is COLD. So, be sure to wear warm clothes out there because I would hate for you to get cold before the tour and you get a chance to put on your snowmobile gear. They will provide a balaclava, shoes, a suit, and mittens.
They will also fit you for a helmet. I find balaclavas kind of gross on snowmobile tours, so I would bring your own if you have it (make sure it is tight and thin so the helmet fits over it).
Once you’re dressed, you and your group will head out to the snowy landscapes on your snow scooters before returning to camp for a hot meal in a traditional Sami lavvu by the fire. You’ll then be bussed back to Tromsø to continue the rest of your day (and hopefully see the northern lights).
2. Evening snowmobiling tour at Camp Tamok
Dates available: December 1, 2024 to April 6, 2025
Duration: 7 hours
Languages: English
Meeting Point: Samuel Arnesens gate 5

This second popular snowmobile tour also takes place at Camp Tamok and it is a 7-hour adventure that gives you the possibility to also see the northern lights on it!
From Tromsø, you will spend 1.5 hours getting to Camp Tamok (the same place as the Tromsø Ice Domes) and then you’ll get dressed and briefed for your adventure through the Arctic landscapes on snowmobile!
After your trip is done (and you hopefully spot the aurora), you will head back for a traditional Sami meal of Bidos in a lavvu. Do note that during the high season, the tour and meal may be switched around depending on the number of travelers.
This is a great northern lights combo tour option and one I think is unbeatable!
3. Lyngen Alps guided snowmobile tour from Tromsø
Dates available: January 2, 2025 to March 31, 2025
Duration: 7 hours
Languages: English
Meeting Point: Tromsø Havn Prostneset

This is a 7(ish) hour snowmobile tour that will take you out into the Northern Norwegian wilderness at the Lyngen Alps! You will be picked up during the morning and transported to Aurora Wonderland Basecamp. There will also be a ferry ride on this journey.
Once you arrive, you and the rest of the snowmobilers will be given gear and briefed before heading out.
Once you wrap things up on the adventure side of things, you will come back for the relaxing side of things!
You’ll get to warm up with a hot meal at Basecamp and then be taken back to Tromsø where you’ll arrive at about 4pm.
❄️ Note: The ferry is included in the price of the tour. You will take the bus to Breivikeidet where it will drop you off at the ferry port. Once you make the crossing, Aurora Wonderland will pick you up on the other side (Svensby) and take you to where your tour will start.
4. Overnight snowmobile safari in the Lyngen Alps (+ glass igloo)
Dates available: January 5, 2025 to March 31, 2025
Duration: 7 hours
Languages: English
Meeting Point: Scandic Ishavshotel

This unique snowmobile tour in Tromsø offers you a combo option where you will get a chance to snowmobile and then come back to a glass aurora igloo for the northern lights! After being picked up in Tromsø, you will drive to the Lyngen Alps which is one of the prettiest places to visit near Tromsø!
After arriving at Aurora Wonderland Basecamp, you will enjoy a delicious warm meal before heading out snowmobiling.
There will be 2 people on a snowmobile and you have the option to switch drivers mid-way (but both need a driver’s license or there will be no switching). Once your adventure is done, you will go back to Basecamp for dinner before you get to impatiently wait for the aurora to arrive if conditions permit.
You are free to relax in the comfort of your crystal lavvo or you can trek out a bit and enjoy the fresh mountain air.
The following morning, you will have a traditional Norwegian breakfast before departing back to Tromsø. This is such a unique combo tour option and one that is perfect for couples (and others).
What to Know Before Snowmobiling in Tromsø
I have included a few tips for your Tromsø snowmobile trip based on my experience snowmobiling there and in other places. Let me know if you have a question or concern that I didn’t cover – I am happy to answer!
✅ Follow the instructions given by your guide. If you have issues following instructions, don’t take a snowmobile tour. This is one of the most dangerous tours in Tromsø but it is perfectly safe if you do as you’re told and listen.
✅ You will need a valid driver’s license to drive a snowmobile in Norway. While this is nothing new for most countries, please do know that Norway enforces it for insurance and safety purposes. Bring it with you for the day! Don’t have a driver’s license? You can be a passenger on this tour but you cannot drive.
✅ Each snowmobile will have two people on them. If both of you have valid driver’s licenses, you will switch drivers mid-way, so be prepared. If you are a solo traveler embarking on this trip, do know you will likely be paired with another solo traveler or a group that has an odd number of people.
✅ Prepare to be cold. You will be given the proper clothing, but you will also be driven out of Tromsø – which means the temperatures will plummet! Do NOT take your gloves off during this trip if you can help it. It will make you colder. If you’re a driver, there are usually heated handles on the snowmobile. The guide may not inform you about this, but they exist. This does not help the passenger, but will definitely be good for the driver (ask the guide if you can’t figure out how to turn them on).
✅ Go to the bathroom before you go out. If you’re a man, you will have an easier time using the bathroom in the wilderness but it is so difficult for women as we have to pull down an entire suit and risk peeing onto it. I’m not kidding – I have personally done it and it is awful.
✅ Your tour will likely have a helmet with a facemask. This is good for those with glasses and it makes it easier to wear them! If they give you goggles, it is more of a challenge, but I have yet to take a snowmobile tour in Tromsø that hasn’t given me a helmet with a facemask instead of goggles.
✅ Don’t show up drunk or hungover. Self-explanatory.
