Where to Rent Winter Clothes in Tromsø, Norway (+ Gear)

Across my websites, I get regular questions about what to pack in winter for Tromsø. I often reply with my usual list of things (like a parka, snowboots, etc) before asking them the most important question, “Wait… where do you live?!”

And the reply I dread the most is, “Singapore.” Or “Australia”. Or “Brazil”. Or “Florida”. You get the picture.

Coming from a warmer climate to Tromsø in the dead of winter is a challenge in itself with ticket prices, daylight changes, and the journey there. But having to buy a completely new wardrobe is also a pain, not to mention unsustainable and expensive!

That is why I am writing this guide about where to rent winter clothes in Tromsø. I know many people love the process of shopping for winter clothing for a trip (and they will always dress way cuter than I will so I am kind of jealous)… but others don’t want the hassle. Fair enough on both sides!

Should you rent winter clothes in Tromsø?

You might want to consider renting winter gear in Tromsø IF:

  • You don’t want to bring large suitcases with you on your trip (or you want to fill them with souvenirs instead).
  • You are from somewhere in the world where you’ll likely never wear this clothing again.
  • You are on a budget and don’t already own winter gear.
  • You prefer a more sustainable approach to your trip.
  • You are concerned about purchasing the right type of clothing.
  • You have some winter gear but are missing something (like snow boots).

Winter gear is heavy and not small. It will consume a lot of space in your suitcase. This can be very daunting for those who aren’t particular about what to wear on their trip.

It can also be annoying if you’re traveling from Australia, for example, and combining a trip to the Arctic with a trip to somewhere warmer. You really don’t need to tote along a bunch of winter clothes for a few days in Tromsø!

This could be you……..

Renting clothing can also be a cheaper option in many cases. While it won’t always be, depending on the duration of your trip, you can see the packages offered at Tromsø Outdoor (the place I suggest renting) and evaluate if it is a more budget-friendly alternative for you and the people you are traveling with.

Another perk of renting clothing is that you don’t have to worry about questioning whether a boot you’re about to buy is warm enough or whether or not a jacket has enough down in it. Renting your gear gives you access to clothing made for the Arctic without having to commit to putting those pieces in your own closet!

Cons of Renting Winter Clothes in Tromsø

Honestly, the only con I can come up with is that you don’t get to adhere to your style 100%. If you’re coming to Tromsø to spruce up your Instagram feed with cute photos of you in a beautiful place, I don’t think you’re going to be pleased with the rental options.

The rental gear is made for practicality and not aesthetics. On a side note, you can rent individual pieces so you can dress cute from the waist up and still rent a pair of boots if you don’t want to bring a pair with you.

Renting Winter Gear at Tromsø Outdoor

The best place to rent winter gear in Tromsø is at Tromsø Outdoor (Fredrik Langes gate 14). They have been around since 2006 and offer equipment and clothing rental right in the heart of the city. They also offer activities but I’ll get into that a little further down.

I have to be honest, I own more winter gear and clothing than anyone I know, so I don’t rent when I travel. But I popped into Tromsø Outdoor to chat with them and get a tour of their office and rental rooms so I could see things for myself last month before recommending them here to my readers.
