Best Tromsø Airport to City Options (Overview)
These are the airport transfer options I cover in this guide:
- Tromsø private airport transfer (easiest option as you can pre-book it)
- Public transportation (the cheapest option)
- Flybuss Airport Express Coach
- Taking a taxi (this is surprisingly affordable via an app)
- Renting a car (the best option, but only if you’re comfortable with the elements)
One thing to also note is that some hotels in Tromsø offer airport shuttles – so be sure to check with them before booking one of your own to see if this is an option!
About the Tromsø Airport
Tromsø Airport (TOS) is located pretty close to the city center in a place called Langenes and it is an international airport. While many flights come up from Oslo, you will also find seasonal flights from other places, like Rovaniemi and London.
The airport is located 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) away from the center and the ride will take you about 10-15 minutes, depending on where you’re heading. Most passengers arrive (or transit) during the winter months.
Best Tromsø Airport to City Options (With Details)
1. Private Transfer from the Tromsø Airport
If you have airport anxiety like me, you may want to pre-book your airport transportation before you even arrive in Tromsø!
This private transfer is surprisingly affordable (around $90 or so), can take up to 7 people, and will be waiting for you upon arrival.
It may not be the cheapest option in this guide, but it may also not be the priciest when you consider group size! The minivan will pick you up at the Tromsø Airport and take you directly to your accommodation.

2. Public Bus from Tromsø Airport (Cheapest Option)
Visiting Tromsø on a budget? This is definitely your best pick, then!
You can take Buses 40 or 42 which leaves frequently from the Tromsø Airport and go to the city center (and vice versa). It is a pretty short ride and easy to do if you don’t have much luggage.
Bus 24 is also an option but it goes to different parts of the city and not the city center.
As of January 8, 2025, ticket prices for Tromsø’s buses to and from the airport are NOK 44 ($4.15) for adults and NOK 22 ($2) for toddlers and children. This is a one-way ticket.
You can learn more in the Svipper app. Tromsø Airport is called ‘Tromsø Lufthavn’ in Norwegian.
3. Flybuss Airport Express Bus
Another option I have used several times in the past is the Flybuss Airport Express bus.
It is more expensive than taking public transportation, but it is synced with the flight schedules and not a regular timetable, so it makes it an easier option when you arrive. It will take you directly from the Tromsø Airport to the city center without stopping until it reaches the city bus stops.
The bus picks up next to the arrivals hall and it waits after flight arrivals. The ticket price for the Flybuss Airport Express coach (as of January 8, 2025) is NOK 125 ($12) for adults and NOK 80 ($8) for children 4-15.
This is for a one-way ticket that you can purchase beforehand online or once you arrive on the bus. Cards are accepted.
If you want to purchase a return ticket on the spot, it will be NOK 200 ($20) for adults and NOK 130 ($13) for kids 4-15. Be sure to save this ticket for your return journey!
One of the most popular stops to get off at in the center is the Scandic Ishavet Hotel (located near the harbor). Click here to see the Flybuss Express bus schedule.
4. Airport Taxi
An option I only started recently using (because I never imagined taxis being affordable in Norway after living there for years) is a Tromsø city taxi.
The best way to plan this form of transportation is to download their app before your arrival and have it ready to go. Here are the links and a number to call if you’d rather book by phone:
You can also take your chances of there being a free one outside upon arrival. But, I think it is best to have the app on your phone and ready to use once you land.
Once you have a confirmed taxi coming for you, be sure to give them the reference number that the app gives you to ensure you get in the right one.
Taxi prices from the Tromsø Airport to the city hover around 270 NOK ($25). Maybe a little cheaper. Taxis take debit and credit cards. Uber, Lyft, and Bolt are not available in Tromsø.
5. Renting a Car at the Tromsø Airport
While I do not encourage this for 95% of winter travelers, it is a fun option in the summer and shoulder months! It gives you so much freedom to explore all the cool places that surround Tromsø!
But, please never rent a car in the Nordics if you are not skilled at driving in snow and winter conditions.
At the Tromsø Airport, you will find companies like Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Budget, and more.
I use Discover Cars for car rental on the road as it gives me a comparison of companies, helping me find the cheapest options.

Getting Back to the Tromsø Airport from the City
If you are returning back to the Tromsø Airport from the city, it is just as easy! Ask your hotel where the nearest stop is, or get back to where you arrived. There are stops scattered throughout the city and even Google Maps will give you directions to the nearest bus stops.
If you’re taking the Flybuss back to the airport, just head to the link I mentioned above for a full list of their stops.
