An Honest Guide to Visiting the Tromsø Ice Domes (2025-2026)
For several years, the Tromsø Ice Domes have been welcoming visitors keen to see what a world of ice looks like. Made famous by their hotel (which hasn’t existed since the 2023-2024 season), the Tromsø Ice Domes have evolved into a full-on snow park experience.
I have had the opportunity to visit twice (once when it was a hotel and once recently with its new ‘snow park’ mission)… and I have a lot of thoughts. I have also visited every ice hotel and sculpture park in the Nordics, so I can easily note its worth.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the following:
What are the Tromsø Ice Domes?
Previously, the Tromsø Ice Domes were a hotel and snow park experience in Tamokdalen (Tamok Valley) about an hour and a half from Tromsø’s city center.
The hotel that was first opened in 2017-2018 had a couple of nice common spaces and a few rooms with different themes, all carved out intricately in ice and snow. It was impressive to those who had never visited an ice hotel, but I have seen them all in the Nordics and it was by far the least impressive of them all.

Today, the Tromsø Ice Domes are a snow park where you can see a few themed rooms carved from the ice and snow, get lost in a snow maze, and play with some fun snow equipment.
Honestly, it is more of an Arctic wilderness experience first and an ice palace second. I will explain more about what today’s program looks like.

Tamokdalen (Tamok Valley) in Øverbygd is where the Tromsø Ice Domes are located and you’ll also find some glamping igloos, sled dogs, and reindeer there. This is where all of the activities owned by Norwegian Travel take place. I highly recommend their snowmobiling and dog-sledding tours, FYI.
Should you visit the Tromsø Ice Domes Snow Park?
I will preface this by saying that this experience may not be for everyone. While I think it is a unique way to get out of Tromsø city center, I also think it may not meet your expectations if you have:
- Visited the better ice hotels in the Nordics (Arctic SnowHotel in Rovaniemi, Sorrisniva in Alta, Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi)
- Live somewhere with a lot of snow and you know basic skills (like how to make a fire, ski, etc)
The Tromsø Ice Domes’ current program is very much aimed at those who have little experience with snow and winter survival. There were a couple of rooms made from ice when I was there (actually a lot had washed away but I discuss that later in the guide) and the rest was about the wilderness experience and being outside.

As someone who lives in the Arctic, I found it a little bit basic for me, personally. But, as mentioned above, if you don’t live somewhere with snow or haven’t visited another ice hotel, it is definitely a trip I recommend!
If you are traveling with children, on the other hand, I definitely recommend this trip.

There are reindeer around that you can photograph, and you can also stroll around the husky area a bit and say hello to the dogs. Kids will also thoroughly enjoy the snow maze!
Tromsø Ice Domes Snow Park Dates (2025-2026 Season)
The Tromsø Ice Domes snow park is open from December 20, 2025 until April 6, 2026.
Tromsø Ice Domes Snow Park Program (2025-2026 Season)
The Tromsø Ice Domes Snow Park’s program is expected to be similar this season to what I experienced last season! It is all about the wilderness experience!
There is a snow maze, an ice sculpture park, reindeer waiting to be said hello to, and husky dogs. You will learn to make a campfire and also have the time to test your skills out on tandem skis and snowshoes.

The rooms made of ice last year were a bar area and another was a hotel room (you can’t stay there, they just wanted to show what the previous Tromsø Ice Domes looked like). I assume it will be similar this season.

Here is the itinerary for the morning excursion:
- 8am until 9:30am: Transportation from Tromsø to Camp Tamok
- 9:30am until 10:15am: Toilet break, get dressed in winter clothing, and a welcome briefing
- 10:15am until 1:15pm: Wilderness program starts, including the Tromsø Ice Domes sculpture park
- 1:15pm to 2:45pm: Transfer back to Tromsø
In the bar area, they had warm juice, Norwegian brown cheese, non-alcoholic shots, and more. You will also be given a sausage to grill over the campfire you will learn to make.

The host will make some delicious (and warm!) soup for you to enjoy, as well. If you are a vegetarian or have food allergies, you will need to put in your request before you arrive. Requests made on the spot will cost 150 NOK ($15).
The program comes with transportation from Tromsø, or you can purchase a ticket excluding transport (if you happen to have your own car).
How to Get to the Tromsø Ice Domes
You can either drive yourself there (be sure to purchase an entrance ticket EXCLUDING transport as it is cheaper) or take the bus organized with the program from Tromsø city center. I went this way one time and drove myself another time.
- Check prices and availability WITH transportation
- Check prices and availability WITHOUT transportation
The meeting place for the trip is at Tromsø Havn Prostneset (inside the main entrance hall) at Samuel Arnesens gate 5. Be sure to arrive a little early.

What to Wear to the Tromsø Ice Domes
I would wear your usual gear that you have with you in Tromsø city center, but do note that it is MUCH colder in Tamokdalen.

Because of this, they also have some winter gear you can dress in at the snow park! They have winter suits and insulated boots.
FAQ and Tips
What happens if spring arrives early?
Last season, Tromsø had heavy rains in February and… it washed a lot of the Tromsø Ice Domes away. When I arrived, not much was left.
I was warned on their website but I still went through with the experience because I wanted to have information for this site.

If you are booking a Tromsø Ice Domes excursion later in the winter, I would keep an eye out on the weather in Tromsø just to see if the weather is nice and wintry!
Interestingly, while February washed most of the snow park away before my trip, a huge snowfall happened right before I arrived, so it still looked like a winter wonderland out that way!
Is this experience good for kids?
I think it is epic for kids, but they do not recommend it for children under 4. It is pretty cold in Tamok Valley and the wilderness activities are best for kids over 4.

Is the Magic Ice Bar in Tromsø the same thing?
NO! I am not a fan of the Magic Ice Bar as I think it is poor value for money, to be honest. The Tromsø Ice Domes are a far better experience, and you can escape the city center for a bit.
Tamok Valley is gorgeous and you will see a lot of the Norwegian wilderness this way.

Are the Tromsø Ice Domes wheelchair-accessible?
Unfortunately, most of the snow park is NOT wheelchair-accessible. I would not recommend this experience (if visiting an ice hotel or snow park is high on your list, there are a few around the Nordics that are fairly accessible – please send me a private message and I will be happy to share my thoughts).
Can I buy tickets to the Tromsø Ice Domes upon arrival?
I wouldn’t recommend it because they may be fully booked that day. The best thing to do is scour their website the day before and see if there is any availability the following day (if you’re doing this last minute, which I wouldn’t recommend in the first place). What the Ice Domes offer is an organized program, not just ticketed times.
